About
MADISON
is a San Francisco based film photographer. Her appreciation for photography came from her love for magazines and the editorial photoshoots within them growing up. Discovering the darkroom in her college years led her to begin making more conceptual and documentarian style photographs. Her darkroom prints are often experimental; playing with directed light exposure, moving focus, under-exposing, solarizing, and other techniques. Her documentary-style photographs are based on her family in her series Family Time. This series examines the evolution of family dynamic and narrative through the lens of someone who feels a disconnection from it all. Although her images vary in topic and style, they each carry Madison’s cinematic point of view throughout them.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I use photography to keep my childhood wonder alive; to explore the sentiment of nostalgia and better understand the world around me while maintaining this practice. Through my work, I am focused on the imagery of my unconscious mind and consider the lines between reality and dreamstate. I invoke the ideas and mysteries I considered as a kid to my lens, and make images that reflect this dream world as a means to connect my imagination. I utilize experimental darkroom processes, such as playing with focus and movement as the image is being exposed, as well as cinematic compositions, and light to make pictures rooted in these concepts. My artistic pursuit explores a variety of photographic styles including editorial, documentarian, and conceptual. Pushing boundaries of image making allows for my work to pass from representational to dreamlike and fairytale spaces, leaving the viewer wondering how accurate their own perception may be.
